Namibia – Nothing Short of Fantastic!!

IMG_8947

We finally found one of the dustiest corners in the world – the Namib desert! After two days of driving on silty, dusty and sandy back roads the inside of the Land Rover was plastered. Our once tidy and peaceful cocoon had become a dust bin choking us to sleep. Despite the dust the landscape and views were stunning.

The hardiness of these desert creatures to live in such a harsh environment is fascinating.

The constant hum of the wind and abrasive sandstorms gave the former diamond boom town, now desolate ghost town of Kolmanskop an eerie feel.

Relic from the past, slowly being swallowed by the desert.

One of the two BMW 650’s piloted by German husband and wife duo Birgit and Rainer whom we shared a camp with in Sesriem. A double booking mishap by the park management that resulted in fantastic company. On the road since October 2013, there was no shortage of tales shared over supper. Checkout their blog http://www.bembel-on-tour.de.

After making it back to civilization in Namibia’s capital city of Windhoek, with mixed emotions it’s time to park the Yster Ratel after 79 days in its company. The bond we’ve formed will only be temporarily broken as we trade the 4WD and Namibia landscapes for a couple of pairs of hiking books and big mountains before returning to Namibia to see the rest of what Southern Africa has to offer. It’s long been a dream of tramping around the Himalayas and in a few days we will be living this dream. With an ever so brief stop in Dubai, too short to take in a dive :( our next post will be from Kathmandu, Nepal.

Cheers, Tamaira & Michel
